Give Little Bluestem a Try

Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a native grass that prefers poor soils, full sun and dry conditions. It is 2-3 ft wide but cultivars vary in height 2-6 ft. so be sure to read the tags to assure the plant is the height you expect.

The Chicago Botanic Garden conducted trials of a cultivar called Carousel which is compact (24-36” high), stays upright even in rich soil, is blue green in spring turning multi colored pink to mahogany as the season progresses.

Ornamental grasses are low maintenance, requiring only cutting to 1-2 ft in early spring. Most grow 3+ ft wide and are sold in the price range of other perennials, making them a bargain for their impact in the garden. Most ornamental grasses require full sun, but Carex prefers shade.

Go native and select a Little Bluestem for your garden.
