The plumed plant in the picture is Goatsbeard (Aruncus dioicus). It is a slow to establish long lived native perennial for the middle or back of the border (depending how tall your border is), but once established it puts on quite a show each year. It is just finishing blooming now, but blooms for about two weeks. It is about 5' tall with blooms, 4' tall and wide without, well behaved and adds texture to the garden the rest of the season. The plumes turn tan then brown as they age and persist until removed. It likes moist fertile soil, tolerates part to full shade and is a wonderful addition to the shade garden.
